All about Chat Rooms

  1. To enter the chat room simply enter a nickname in the box provided on the previous page. A nickname is simply a way of identifying yourself in the chat room. This way the other people in the chat room have no way of knowing who you are, or less you tell them.
  2. Under no circumstances what so ever use real names, pass on any personal information about yourself or others, do not arrange to meet people you do not know.
  3. DON’T SHOUT. When you are in chat rooms – the use of capital letters in addition to traditional punctuation is considered to mean that you are shouting. Excessive use of shouting in your correspondence will lead to you being ignored or even possibly ostracised. Check that you haven’t accidentally left the Caps Lock engaged on your keyboard.
  4. Be careful with humour. Using the Internet it is possible to talk to almost anyone around the world quickly and easily. As a great number of the people you correspond with will never have met you, it is unlikely that they will understand that you are joking. Get to know people before you start making jokes.
  5. Abbreviations. In the course of your communications you will come across a number of different short hand terms which are used to save time or illustrate the tone in which a message was written. Some of the more common terms are shown below:
  • ASL – What is your age, sex and location?
  • :-) – Happy or joking
  • :-( - Unhappy
