FUNCTION OF AN EXHAUST
Exhaust gases emitted from today's high revving car engines are both extremely
hot (up to 900°c) and expelled at a very high speed. It is the role of the exhaust
system to direct these gases of combustion to a safe and convenient exit point on the vehicle both within the cars
length and the confines of the under body.
The speed of the gases in the exhaust pipe fluctuates dramatically with the opening and closing of the exhaust valves in the engine and it is the continuous variation in air pressure that causes the noise level. Allowing the gases to expand in the silencer boxes reduces the speed and therefore the noise to an acceptable level (current legislation is for 74db[A].
LOW MILEAGE / SHORT JOURNEYS
If your car only covers a low mileage then the life of your exhaust system will
be reduced.
When the car engine is switched off gases of combustion remaining in the
exhaust system condense with cooling to form an acidic condensate. This leads to
internal corrosion, the primary cause of exhaust failure.
When the car is next used the condensate will evaporate with the heat of the engine/exhaust system before being expelled. With a low mileage car the journey may not be sufficient for the engine to reach the required temperature for evaporation to take place and the condensate may instead accumulate from one journey to the next, further aggravating the internal corrosion.
EXHAUST MOUNTINGS
All the exhaust mountings should be replaced at the same time as the exhaust.
The exhaust and exhaust mountings are subjected to continuous stress and vibration and failure to replace worn
mountings could lead to the premature failure of the exhaust system itself.
THE SILENCER BOX
Your exhaust system may contain either a MECHANICAL and/or an ABSORPTION silencer box. A MECHANICAL
box alone (a mechanical box does not contain any sound absorbing packing material) may be insufficient to reduce
exhaust noise in the confines of the length of the car and an ABSORPTION box with its pack and superior noise
reduction qualities may be needed. The ABSORPTION box is injected with continuous E-glass fibre.
BENEFITS OF E-GLASS PACKING MATERIAL
As it is continuous the pack is prevented from becoming dislodged from its chamber. This could otherwise cause a blockage in the exhaust system and lead to engine failure.
After an initial settling-in period E-glass fills its chamber evenly. By eliminating any concentration of pack exhaust gas flow through E-glass is better than other materials. Variations in back pressure within the exhaust system are reduced and the cars 'optimum performance is maintained.
E-glass does not absorb as much moisture (in the form of acidic condensate) as other pack materials and the effect of internal corrosion - the primary cause of exhaust failure is lessened.
